The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine American heavy bomber that first flew on 28 July 1935 and became the symbol of the United States Army Air Forces’ daylight bombing campaign over occupied Europe. Boeing and its partners built 12,731 of them, and their massed formations, bristling with defensive guns, carried the air war to Germany by day while the Royal Air Force bombed by night. The B-17 was tough enough to bring its crews home with engines shot away and great holes torn in its structure, and that reputation for absorbing punishment made it one of the most famous aircraft of the Second World War.

No aircraft is more closely bound up with the American war in the air than the Flying Fortress. It was not the fastest bomber, nor the one that carried the heaviest load, but it flew the hardest missions of the daylight offensive, took the worst of the losses, and kept going until air superiority was won. This is the complete story of how it came to be, how it fought, why it earned its name, and where you can still see one today.

Origins and development

The B-17 began as a gamble. In 1934 the United States Army Air Corps issued a requirement for a multi-engine bomber, widely understood to mean two engines, to defend the American coastline. Boeing took the bold decision to build a four-engine aircraft instead, its Model 299, betting that more engines would mean more speed, more range and more bomb load. It was an expensive risk for a company that had no guarantee of an order.

The Model 299 first flew on 28 July 1935, and it was so large and so heavily armed for its day that a Seattle journalist, seeing the gun positions studding its fuselage, called it a “flying fortress”. Boeing liked the name enough to trademark it. The prototype was fast and impressive, and it looked set to win the competition outright until disaster struck. On 30 October 1935 it crashed on take-off at Wright Field, killing the crew, because the control locks had been left engaged. The accident was not the aircraft’s fault, but it cost Boeing the immediate contract, which went to the smaller twin-engine Douglas B-18.

The Army was impressed enough to order a small batch of the Boeing anyway, as the YB-17, and development continued through the late 1930s. The lesson of the crash, that even the best crew could forget a vital step on a complex aircraft, led directly to the invention of the pilot’s checklist, a procedure that has saved countless lives since. By the time the United States entered the war at the end of 1941, the Flying Fortress had matured into a capable heavy bomber, and it was about to be built in numbers no one in 1935 could have imagined.

Design: the flying fortress

The B-17 was built around a single idea: a bomber that could defend itself. Four engines gave it the height, range and load to reach targets deep in Germany, and a heavy battery of machine guns was meant to let formations fight their way to the target and back without fighter escort. Everything about the aircraft flowed from that doctrine of the self-defending bomber.

Power came from four Wright R-1820 Cyclone air-cooled radial engines of around 1,200 horsepower each, driving the aircraft to a maximum of about 287 miles per hour and a service ceiling near 35,000 feet. That altitude mattered, because it kept the bombers above much of the flak and gave the Norden bombsight the height it needed for accurate aiming. The B-17 carried a crew of ten, most of them gunners, and a bomb load that varied with range but was typically between 4,000 and 8,000 pounds.

The defensive armament grew heavier with every version as combat experience showed how exposed the bombers were. The definitive B-17G, the most numerous variant with 8,680 built, carried thirteen 0.5-inch Browning machine guns in nose, chin, top, ball, waist and tail positions, making it the most heavily armed of the Allied heavy bombers. The chin turret under the nose was added specifically to counter the head-on attacks that German fighters had learned to make. Yet even thirteen guns per aircraft, multiplied across a formation, proved unable to stop a determined fighter force, a hard truth that the campaign of 1943 would drive home.

The daylight bombing doctrine

The B-17 was the instrument of a very particular theory of air warfare. The United States Army Air Forces believed in high-altitude, daylight, precision bombing: hitting specific industrial targets such as factories, oil plants and ball-bearing works from great height with the Norden bombsight, rather than bombing cities at night as RAF Bomber Command did.

The doctrine rested on two assumptions. The first was that the Norden bombsight could put bombs precisely onto small targets from four miles up, which was true in clear weather over a practice range but far harder over a cloudy, defended Europe. The second was that tight formations of heavily armed bombers could defend themselves against fighters without escort, flying in carefully arranged boxes so that hundreds of guns could cover every angle of approach. This was the theory that sent the Fortresses out by day, and it was the theory that 1943 would test to destruction.

The division of labour with the RAF became the shape of the whole Allied bombing offensive. The Americans bombed by day, aiming for precision against war industry; the British bombed by night, aiming at whole cities to break German morale and production. Together they subjected Germany to round-the-clock bombing, and the B-17, more than any other aircraft, was the face of the American daylight half of that campaign.

The Eighth Air Force over Europe

The B-17’s war in Europe was fought by the Eighth Air Force, the great American air armada that built up in eastern England from 1942. Flying from a network of airfields across East Anglia, the Eighth grew into one of the largest concentrations of air power ever assembled, and the Flying Fortress was its backbone.

Life for the crews was brutal and short. A tour was set at 25 missions, later raised, and for much of 1943 the statistical chance of surviving 25 daylight missions over Germany was grim. Crews flew in unpressurised aircraft at 25,000 feet in temperatures of forty degrees below zero, breathing oxygen from masks, for missions that lasted many hours, under fighter attack and through curtains of flak. Frostbite, anoxia, wounds and death were constant companions, and the men personalised their aircraft with names and nose art as a small assertion of humanity against the odds.

Among the most famous was the Memphis Belle, one of the first B-17s to complete 25 missions and return its crew home in mid-1943, an achievement so rare at the time that it was turned into a celebrated morale film. Behind the fame lay the reality that thousands of other crews did not make it, and that the Eighth Air Force suffered casualty rates that, in the worst months, rivalled the trenches of the First World War. The B-17 carried those men, and too often it was the last thing many of them knew.

Schweinfurt and Black Thursday

The crisis of the daylight campaign came in the autumn of 1943, and its name was Schweinfurt. The town was the centre of German ball-bearing production, a target whose destruction the planners believed could cripple the entire war machine, and it lay deep in Germany, far beyond the range of the escort fighters of the day.

The first great raid, the combined Schweinfurt-Regensburg mission of 17 August 1943, cost 60 bombers in a single day. Worse followed. On 14 October 1943, a day the crews called Black Thursday, the Eighth sent 291 Fortresses back to Schweinfurt. Sixty were shot down, another 17 were so badly damaged they had to be scrapped, and 121 more returned with battle damage. More than a quarter of the aircraft sent were lost in that one mission, 77 of the 291 dispatched, and 650 of the 2,900 airmen who set out did not come back. It was a catastrophe.

Black Thursday proved that the theory of the self-defending bomber had failed. Whatever the weight of defensive fire, unescorted formations could not survive deep penetrations of German airspace against a concentrated fighter defence. The Eighth Air Force suspended deep raids into Germany, and for a time the whole daylight offensive hung in the balance. The B-17 had not failed; the doctrine that sent it out alone had. What the campaign needed was not a better bomber but a fighter that could go all the way to the target and back.

The long reach of the Mustang

The answer arrived at the turn of 1944 in the shape of the North American P-51 Mustang. Fitted with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and, crucially, drop tanks, the Mustang could escort the bombers all the way to Berlin and back, fighting off the German interceptors the whole way. It changed everything.

With long-range escort, the arithmetic of the daylight campaign reversed. Now it was the German fighter force that suffered the crippling losses, because to get at the bombers it had to fight the escorts, and the Americans could replace their losses while the Germans increasingly could not. Through the spring of 1944 the Eighth Air Force deliberately used its bombers as bait to draw the Luftwaffe into battle with the Mustangs, and the German day-fighter arm was worn down to the point of collapse. By the time of the Normandy invasion in June 1944, the Allies had won air superiority over Western Europe.

The B-17 was central to that victory, but not in the way the pre-war planners had imagined. It won not by defending itself, but by forcing the enemy up to fight, and by pressing on through the worst period of losses until the escorts arrived to turn the tables. The story of the Flying Fortress is inseparable from the story of the Mustang; neither could have won the daylight air war alone. Absorbing punishment

If one quality made the B-17 legendary among the men who flew it, it was toughness. The aircraft could absorb an extraordinary amount of damage and still bring its crew home, and the war is full of documented cases of Fortresses returning with damage that should by rights have destroyed them.

Fortresses came back with engines shot out, with great sections of wing or tail missing, with the nose blown open, with hydraulics and controls shot away, and still they flew. One famous aircraft returned after a mid-air collision had torn away much of its tail; others landed with hundreds of holes, with dead and wounded aboard, on two engines or fewer. The robust structure, the four engines and the sheer strength built into the airframe gave the crews a fighting chance of survival that a lighter, more fragile aircraft would not have offered.

This reputation was not just sentiment. It had a real effect on morale, because crews believed, with reason, that the Fortress would do everything it could to get them home. In a campaign where the odds were so poor, that faith in the aircraft mattered enormously. The B-17 earned its crews’ devotion the hard way, by surviving punishment that killed other aircraft, and that is a large part of why it is remembered with such affection eighty years later.

Variants

The Flying Fortress evolved continuously through the war, each version answering the lessons written in the losses of the one before. The main wartime marks trace a clear line of increasing defensive strength.

The early B-17B, C and D models were the pre-war and very early war versions, combat-tested in small numbers by the RAF, which found them wanting without the heavy defensive armament that later came. The B-17E was the first true combat version, with a large tail fin for stability and a proper tail gun position. The B-17F refined it further, and the definitive B-17G, of which 8,680 were built, added the chin turret to counter head-on attacks and brought the gun total to thirteen. Beyond the bombers, some airframes were converted into other roles, and after the war Fortresses served as air-sea rescue aircraft, transports, drones and even, in modified form, as airliners and firefighting tankers, a long second life for a design that had done its main job by 1945.

The ten-man crew

A B-17 was flown and fought by a crew of ten, each with a specific job, and understanding those roles is the key to understanding what the aircraft actually was: not a single pilot’s machine but a flying team. The interior was cramped, cold and noisy, and every man depended on the others for his life.

Up front sat the pilot and co-pilot, who flew the aircraft and held formation for hours on end, a physically exhausting task at altitude. In the glazed nose were the bombardier, who took control through the Norden bombsight on the bomb run and manned the guns the rest of the time, and the navigator, who found the way to the target and home. Behind the cockpit the flight engineer doubled as the top-turret gunner, and the radio operator worked his set and another gun.

The rear of the aircraft belonged to the gunners. The ball-turret gunner curled into a cramped sphere slung under the belly, one of the most exposed and frightening positions in the aircraft. Two waist gunners stood at open windows in the freezing slipstream, and the tail gunner defended the vulnerable rear. Every position except the pilots’ was primarily a fighting station, and in the terrible battles of 1943 it was the gunners who fought off the fighters while the pilots held the aircraft steady on the bomb run. The B-17 was a fortress precisely because it was crewed like one.

Beyond Europe: the Pacific and other fronts

Europe is where the B-17 made its name, but it fought elsewhere too, especially early in the war. Fortresses were in action in the Pacific from the very first day, and their experience there shaped the aircraft that later flew over Germany.

B-17s were caught up in the Japanese attacks on the Philippines and Hawaii in December 1941, and they flew against Japanese shipping and airfields in the desperate early Pacific campaigns. High-altitude bombing proved poorly suited to hitting moving ships, and the Pacific’s vast distances and different conditions eventually favoured other aircraft, so the B-17 was largely replaced there by the B-24 Liberator and later the B-29 Superfortress. Even so, the early Pacific fighting exposed the weakness of the lightly armed early models and drove the up-gunning that produced the E, F and G.

The Flying Fortress also served in the Mediterranean and North African campaigns, and small numbers flew with the Royal Air Force, whose early combat trials with lightly armed Fortress Is confirmed that the type needed the heavy defensive armament it later received. These other fronts are less remembered than the great raids on Germany, but they were part of the aircraft’s war and part of how it evolved into the formidable B-17G.

Building the Fortress on an industrial scale

The B-17 was not just a combat aircraft but a triumph of American mass production, and the story of how so many were built is as remarkable as any battle. Boeing could never have produced 12,731 aircraft alone, and the answer was a pooled effort that became a model for wartime industry.

Under what was known as the BDV committee, three companies built the Fortress together: Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed’s Vega subsidiary. Aircraft rolled off assembly lines at Seattle, Long Beach and Burbank, built to a common standard so that parts and sub-assemblies were interchangeable between plants. At the peak, Fortresses were being completed at a rate of many per day, a pace that would have seemed impossible only a few years earlier.

This industrial effort was itself a weapon. The Allied ability to replace losses faster than Germany could inflict them was central to winning the air war, and the B-17 production lines were part of that arithmetic. It is one of the reasons the aircraft that emerged from the disaster of Schweinfurt was not a smaller, beaten force but a larger one: the factories simply out-produced the losses. The workers, many of them women, who built the Fortresses were as much a part of the story as the crews who flew them.

Survivors and where to see one

Of the 12,731 built, only a small number survive. Around 45 B-17s remain in complete form today, most of them in the United States, and only about four are currently airworthy. The rest are museum exhibits, memorials and restoration projects. For an aircraft built in such numbers, the survivors are precious, each one a link to the men who flew the type in the hardest air campaign of the war.

In Europe, the sole airworthy example is Sally B, based at Duxford in Cambridgeshire, which appears at airshows across Britain as a living memorial to the American airmen who flew from England. In the United States, airworthy Fortresses fly with organisations that keep them in the air for commemorations and flights, though their number slowly falls as maintaining a wartime four-engine bomber becomes ever harder and costlier. Major museums including the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the Smithsonian and the Imperial War Museum hold preserved examples, and the story of the type is told at the memorials scattered across the old Eighth Air Force airfields of East Anglia.

Anyone hoping to see a B-17 fly should not take the opportunity for granted. Each airworthy airframe is irreplaceable, and every flying season is precious. Catching Sally B over an English airfield, or one of the American Fortresses at a commemoration, is a chance to see and hear something that will not be possible for ever.

Photographing the B-17 today

Photographing an airworthy Fortress is one of the great pleasures of warbird photography. It is a large, four-engined, propeller-driven aircraft, so the core technique is the same as for any warbird: a shutter speed slow enough to blur the four propeller discs into full arcs while keeping the airframe sharp.

Aim for a shutter speed of around a 200th of a second to give a pleasing propeller blur without risking camera shake, and pan smoothly with the aircraft as it passes. The Fortress in popular memory

Part of the reason the B-17 looms so large is that it has been told and retold in film and book more than almost any other aircraft. The image of the Flying Fortress in the public mind is as much a cultural creation as a historical one, built up over eighty years of storytelling.

It began during the war itself, with the 1944 documentary about the Memphis Belle, and continued with the classic film Twelve O’Clock High, which explored the strain of command in a B-17 group. The Memphis Belle story was retold as a feature film in 1990, and more recently the television series Masters of the Air brought the daylight campaign to a new audience, following the 100th Bomb Group, the famous Bloody Hundredth. The airworthy Fortress Ye Olde Pub, seen in these photographs, wears the triangle-K markings of the 379th Bomb Group, honouring the aircraft at the centre of one of the war’s most extraordinary acts of chivalry, when a German fighter pilot chose to escort a crippled and defenceless B-17 to safety rather than shoot it down. This cultural afterlife matters, because it is how the memory of the men who flew the Fortress is passed on. The aircraft has become a way of remembering a whole generation of airmen, and the preserved and airworthy examples are the physical link to those stories. Legacy

The B-17 is remembered out of all proportion to its numbers or its performance, and rightly so. It carried the American daylight bombing campaign through its darkest period, absorbed losses that would have broken a less determined force, and kept flying until the arrival of long-range escorts turned the air war decisively in the Allies’ favour. It did the hardest job in the hardest way, and its crews loved it for bringing so many of them home.

Its legacy is written in the memorials of East Anglia, in the museums that preserve it, and in the enduring public affection for the Flying Fortress name. More than that, it is written in the doctrine it tested and, in part, disproved: the hard lesson that even the most heavily armed bomber needs fighter escort was learned over Schweinfurt and never forgotten. The B-17 was a magnificent aircraft asked to do an impossible thing alone, and the fact that it endured until the odds were evened is the measure of both the machine and the men who flew it. Nine decades after that first flight in 1935, the sight and sound of a Fortress overhead still stops crowds in their tracks, a reminder of a time when a generation of young men climbed into these aircraft by day and flew into the most heavily defended airspace on earth, and of how many did not come back.
